In recognition of the 50th anniversary of man’s historic landing on the moon, Montblanc has released an exclusive collection of writing instruments that inspires us to reconnect with our planet.
The newly designed StarWalker collection expresses the wonder of being part of one of humankind’s most mysterious and powerful adventures: space exploration.
The collection was unveiled at Montblanc’s stunning new flagship boutique in Sydney CBD on Thursday 20 June. While trays of cocktails and canapes roamed the room, guests and media tested out a range of writing instruments, nibs and inks at Australia’s first Montblanc ink bar.
Available as a fountain pen, ballpoint and fine liner pen, StarWalker includes features designed with space exploration in mind.
Black resin recalls the vast dark expanse of space; a translucent dome below Montblanc’s emblem evokes the earth rising above the lunar horizon; and the cap and barrel represent an astronaut.
For the redesign, Montblanc has partnered with former astronaut and space station commander Leroy Chiao and Korean illustrator JaeHoon Choi to tell their stories of space travel.
“The StarWalker line is about innovation, engineering and modernity,” explains Montblanc CEO, Nicolas Baretzki. “This product line, as well as this new campaign, reminds us to preserve and cherish our planet.”
“The majesty of our planet is difficult to describe,” says Baretzki. “That’s why we decided to take a unique perspective on space exploration by looking back at our planet from the vast expanse of space.”
Chiao has spent a total 229 days in space over the course of four missions and has used Montblanc writing instruments since his student days.
In a series of animated stories illustrated using a StarWalker pen, he shares his impressions of looking back at Earth and its mesmerising blue aura from the stars.
“While orbiting the earth, you realise the majesty of our Blue Planet… home,” Leroy explains. “The earth is alive… I deeply understand this looking down on our colourful planet.”
The StarWalker line-up includes a Precious Resin edition in all black with contrasting metal fittings, a Doué edition with a black resin barrel paired with a metal cap or forepart, and a sleek full Metal edition.
